Business: The Bathing Goddess

Owner: Catherine Pruitt

Product: Natural Handmade Soaps

Tell us about your business, how did you get started?

I spent a couple years buying handmade goats milk when I finally realized one winter that I no longer had the itchy dry spots that would pop up during the cold months. It was at this point I became really interested after doing some research and decided to make my own. I learned with goat’s milk and continue to use it today. I’ve made soap with other liquids as well including beer, wine, aloe water, and even human breast milk.

How long have you been in business?

About 4 years, depending on what you consider the actual start date! I spent a good year learning about different oils and how each behaves in soap making. During that time, I also created and perfected my own recipes.

What is your favorite part of running your own business?

Freedom and flexibility. With a large busy family, working a regular 9-5 is not possible. I can mix soap at midnight or after breakfast. I can work on my website while waiting in the car at softball practice. Creating bath and body products also fills a creative need and an income while I attend nursing school.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Nature and memories. I love beautiful things- don’t we all? A heavy thunderstorm with lots of rain, beautiful and vibrant flowers, freshly cut grass- the smells and sounds that evoke memories. I love when someone picks up a bar of soap, takes a big whiff with their eyes closed and tells me a memory that my soap reminds them of their mom or dad etc.

What are some of your favorite local businesses?

Twisted River Coffee- their coffee is the best I’ve had.

Graeter’s Ice Cream

Indigenous Handcrafted Gallery

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

I hope I’m a millionaire with locations all over the US. Just kidding! Really, I would love to keep growing and eventually open a brick and mortar shop.
