Business: Stitches & Sass
Owner: Sharon Brausch
Product: Modern baby & pet accessories
Tell us about your business, how did you get started?
I am the owner and maker for Stitches & Sass. I create modern baby & pet accessories and like using lots of color and fun patterns. I found that most baby and pet accessories were very tame and expected so I made items with patterns you can't find in stores.
I got started as a quilter. I've been quilting for 20 years and used to make them as baby shower gifts. I wanted to give something that wasn't so labor intensive, so I designed fun little things that I could give more easily. Everyone started telling me I should sell them. I had always wanted to create a business from sewing, so I just went for it!
How long have you been in business?
I have been sewing and quilting for 20 years, but I developed Stitches & Sass in 2015.
What makes your product/business unique?
I like to choose my fabrics based on things you can't find in stores. I'm definitely not the "norm" when it comes to baby colors. I tend to shy away from the traditional pink & blue and try to go with more modern fun fabrics.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Mostly seasons and current trends. I also like to use a lot of food & whimisical prints.
What would you tell someone who wants to start their own business?
Do not give up. It takes a lot of time and effort and a LOT of hard work. It took me 2 years, but I just quit my corporate day job to focus on Stitches & Sass full time. You can definitely do it! It's the best job I've ever had :)
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I never want to grow to the point where I am not sewing the pieces myself; that's what I love about it!! But, I would like to have a few more sewing assistants so I can expand my product line and wholesale possibilities.
