Business: McHarper Manor

Owner: Tabitha and Tom Harper

Product: Graphic Tees

Tell us about your business, how did you get started?

Tom and I started selling at local markets 5 years ago, in early 2014. Where we began is quite a bit different than where we are now - but it's been a natural progression of using my designs & illustrations to adorn useful items. We started with strictly upcycled materials, but in 2015 we added in apparel. We're selling strictly apparel at markets now and it's definitely been the better fit for our business.

What makes your product/business unique?

We think our apparel is not only the highest quality, but also visually appealing - it's really wearable art! We're a husband and wife team and we create each style from start to finish ourselves. While I draw and design a tee's graphic, Tom is burning the screens and printing each piece by hand.

What would you tell someone that wants to open their own business?

It's not all rainbows, but if you are passionate about what you're doing, it's definitely worth it. We always tell our kids, "We'd rather work 16 hours a day doing what we love, than 8 hours a day doing something we don't!" and it's 100% true!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere! Our own city is chock full of amazing things! Our apparel focuses on the adventure, beauty, and celebration around us; from a tshirt touting your love for the outdoors to a brewery map hoodie celebrating Cincinnati's rich heritage in the craft brewing scene. We try to offer something for everyone without compromising beautiful graphics and amazing feel!

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Whew... with 4 high schoolers under our roof by then it's hard to say! LOL! But seriously - throughout the week we'll continue to operate our DIY studio (in Milford) where we teach art and bring other artists in to teach their skills as well. I hope to see that side of our business continue to grow so that we can spread beauty and confidence in making all over the city! We'll always offer retail, as my love for illustrating will never end - and, I mean, who couldn't use another cute shirt?  ;)

Where can readers find out more about your work?
