Business: Kim & Kimberly
Owner: Kim & Kimberly
Product: Science and Art
Tell us about your business, how did you get started?
We went to high school and college together, and eventually became best friends and roommates. We had many crazy adventures together, but most of all loved watching fantasy and sci-fi shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who, reading books, and creating/engineering. Later we would co-author a myth-busting blog, using research, simple experiments, and critical thinking to disprove common myths and dispel pseudo-scientific claims. During all this time we were creating art together, and making a literal ton of projects for gifts and personal use! These experiences and interests inspired us to finally start selling our creations, while getting to work and spend more time together as the ultimate best friend/business partner combo!
How long have you been in business?
We have always been makers, but we officially launched as a team in early summer of 2017.
What makes your product/business unique?
We have a science/geek twist to everything we make, and we only make what we love. It gives us a connection with our customers because of our personal attachment and passion.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
General geekery and science! Kim was raised watching Doctor Who and Star Trek by a chemist and educator, while Kimberly worked in Microbiology and her husband in Biochemistry, so you could say our lives are fully immersed.
What would you tell someone who wants to start their own business?
Have your brand in mind, and find a niche! Oh, and hire a professional photographer (or be one already, like Kim )
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Hopefully Kim will get to quit her full time job, and will be traveling to art shows across the country in her converted school bus studio, while Kimberly has 4 young children and can't plan more than a week in advance, but she hopes to still be creating and working with her best friend, Kim.
