Owner: Katie Re

Product: Cookies & Cakes

Tell us about your business, how did you get started?

I've always had an interest in the kitchen but when it came time to go to college, I switched my major 3 different times. I decided to take some time and found a job at a small local bakery. I loved writing on the cakes so I decided to enroll at The Midwest Culinary Institute. I worked my way up to a main wedding cake decorator at a top bakery here in Cincinnati but when I had my daughter in 2014, I decided to stay at home with her and do cakes on the side. At that time, I had a silly little business name and nothing really felt "official".It was around the time my daughter was just learning her colors and would LOVE telling us the sky was "BLUE!" in late 2015, I decided it was time for a new name: Blue Sky Bakeshop! At first, I offered so many options, flavors, and combinations but over the last few years, I've paired down and really found my focus. My sugar cookie side of the business entered in the fall of 2016 and has quickly become an equal match for the buttercream cakes I offer. I have found that if I stick to a smaller menu I am able to keep my quality up and produce what truly makes me happy! I love being able to create edible works of art- because at the end of the day, it is beautiful but delicious!

What makes your product/business unique?

I work with my customers one on one and aim to create something custom for them and their event. From invitations, script, photos they provide, party themes etc. I find such a joy in creating sweets for each person and party! I am constantly taking in inspiration from everything from paper products the Target dollar spot! Of course, there are so many cookie moguls on IG that are constantly providing insight and new techniques.

What would you tell someone that wants to open their own business?

To anyone who has this dream of starting a small business- do your homework, work hard and never stop learning your craft! Especially in this field, don't feel like the first time you pick up a piping bag or make a batch of dough that it will be magazine worthy! I've been in the kitchen for over 10 years and still practice my writing and new techniques every week. Challenge your self and practice, practice, practice!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I am constantly taking in inspiration from everything from paper products the Target dollar spot! Of course, there are so many cookie moguls on IG that are constantly providing insight and new techniques.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

.As for the future, I am still undecided! I know that I love what I'm doing and my creativity is really great right now! I left work to be a stay at home mom, so that is always first for me. As she gets older and my time frees up, I am eager to take on more customers and grow my business. But, as for a brick and mortar? I'm not sure yet!

Where can readers find out more about your work?

You can follow me on Facebook, Instagram and find all of my pricing, sizing and availability on my website, BlueSkyBakeshop.com. I start my ordering process through the website so check there first and fill out the (super easy!) Order Request Forms. I prefer to do everything through email so those order details get lost- everything is so customizable in my line of work that I want to make sure it is all together.
